Smart Books
Prepare and upload your GST returns
Turn the month’s sales and purchases into GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B, check your input tax credit, and upload to the GST portal.
Before you start
Who this is for
Owners, accountants and tax professionals who file GST for the business.
Before you start
- All sales, purchases and notes for the period posted in Smart Books.
- Your GST portal login. Smart Books asks for a one-time password (OTP) from the portal when you upload.
- Permission to see GST in your Smart Books profile.
Steps
-
Step 1: Open GST and pick the period
Open GST (Alt+G) → Returns and choose the return — for example GSTR-1 — then the month or quarter.
-
Step 2: Review the figures
Smart Books builds the return from your posted entries. Look through the totals, and fix any errors it points out in the entries themselves.
-
Step 3: Check your input tax credit
Under Reconciliation, open GSTR-2B Recon or the GST Reconciliation Centre to compare your purchase bills with what suppliers reported. Use Supplier chase for bills that are missing.
-
Step 4: Upload to the GST portal
For GSTR-1, choose Upload to portal and enter the OTP the GST portal sends to your registered mobile and email. Or download the return file and upload it on the portal yourself.
-
Step 5: File on the GST portal
Sign in at gst.gov.in, open Returns, pick the period and GSTR-1, choose Generate GSTR-1 Summary, check it against Smart Books and file using DSC or EVC OTP.
Tip: Filing itself always happens on the government portal — Smart Books prepares and uploads the data for you.
What happens next
Your return data is on the GST portal, matching your books, and Smart Books shows the return in its history so you can see what was uploaded and when.
Questions
Which returns can Smart Books prepare?
The GST menu lists GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, GSTR-2A, GSTR-2B, GSTR-4, CMP-08, GSTR-9 and others. Which ones you see depends on your registration.
What if my upload is rejected?
Smart Books shows the error codes the portal returned and the affected entries, so you can correct them and upload again.
Can I make e-invoices and e-way bills here?
Yes, under GST → E-Invoice and E-way Bill. Billing can also generate them straight from a saved bill.
