  • 5 steps

Before you start

Who this is for

Businesses that deduct TDS on payments such as rent, contractors or professional fees, and their accountants.

Before you start

  • TDS set on the supplier accounts it applies to (Statutory & tax → TDS applicable).
  • Your TDS challan details for the quarter.
  • Permission to see TDS / TCS in your profile.

Steps

  1. Step 1: Open TDS / TCS

Open TDS / TCS in the side menu (Alt+T).

  2. Step 2: Collect the quarter’s deductions

Open the TDS Workbench and choose Sync from source. The deductions from your payment and purchase entries are listed for the quarter.

  3. Step 3: Link the challans you paid

Open Challan reconciliation, record each TDS deposit and link the deductions it covers.

  4. Step 4: Fix exceptions

Check Compliance exceptions for missing PANs or other problems and correct them in the accounts concerned.

  5. Step 5: Prepare the return

Open the quarterly return — for example Form 140 (ex-26Q) for most payments — review it and download it for filing.

Tip: The new form numbers apply from 1 April 2026; the older forms are kept under Legacy forms for earlier periods.

What happens next

Every deduction for the quarter is matched to a challan, and your quarterly TDS return is ready to file.

Questions

What are Form 140, 144, 143 and 138?

They are the quarterly TDS and TCS statements from 1 April 2026, replacing 26Q, 27Q, 27EQ and 24Q. Smart Books shows the old name next to each.
