  • 4 steps

Before you start

Who this is for

Businesses that must issue e-invoices, or move goods that need an e-way bill.

Before you start

  • A saved bill.
  • A role in Smart Books that includes GST filing — ask the company owner if you do not have it.
  • For an e-Way Bill: the vehicle number, or the transporter’s ID.

Steps

  1. Step 1: Open the saved bill

    Open the bill from Sales.

  2. Step 2: Choose what to generate

Choose Generate e-Invoice, Generate e-Way Bill, or Generate both.

  3. Step 3: Add the transport details

For an e-Way Bill, choose how Goods go by — road, rail, air or ship — and enter the Vehicle number (like KA01AB1234) or a Transporter ID. Distance in km is optional; left blank, the portal works it out from the PIN codes.

  4. Step 4: Check and confirm

Check the customer, GSTIN, items and amounts, then confirm with Yes, file it.

What happens next

The bill shows the e-Invoice and e-Way Bill details once the portal confirms them. If the portal is slow to confirm, you can check again later — nothing is generated twice.

Questions

The portal refused it. What now?

The bill shows the reason. Correct the bill or the transport details and try again — sending it unchanged would be refused the same way.
