  • 5 steps

Before you start

Who this is for

Anyone who takes payments from customers.

Before you start

  • Your cash and bank accounts set up in Smart Books.

Steps

  1. Step 1: Open Money received

Choose Money → Money received (or Mark as received from Money to Collect).

  2. Step 2: Pick the customer and amount

Search for the customer, then enter the Amount, the Date and where it was Received in — the till or bank account the money went into.

  3. Step 3: Say what the payment is for

Choose Against invoice to settle bills, or Advance if no bill is due yet.

  4. Step 4: Settle it against bills

Under Settle against invoices, tick the bills this payment covers. Any amount left over stays on the customer’s account until a later bill is settled.

  5. Step 5: Attach proof and save

Add a screenshot, receipt or bank advice as payment proof if you like, then save the receipt.

What happens next

Smart Books records the receipt, the customer’s balance goes down, and the bills you ticked show as paid.

Questions

How do I record a refund?

A refund is money going out, so record it on Money paid. Money received only records money coming in.
