Smart Books
Bring your data from Tally or Busy
Move your accounts and entries across with the Migration wizard instead of typing them again.
Before you start
Who this is for
Businesses and accountants switching to Smart Books from Tally, Busy or a spreadsheet.
Before you start
- An export from your old software: XML from Tally, or CSV / Excel files from Busy.
- Your company set up in Smart Books, with the financial year you are moving into.
Steps
-
Step 1: Open Imports
In the side menu, open Operations and choose Imports.
-
Step 2: Start the Migration wizard
Choose Migration wizard. It takes Tally XML and Busy CSV or Excel files. For other spreadsheets, the classic CSV / Excel import is on the same page.
-
Step 3: Bring in accounts first
Import your accounts (masters) before your entries, so every entry finds the customer, supplier or account it belongs to.
-
Step 4: Choose how opening balances are posted
The wizard asks how opening balances should be posted in the year you are moving into. Pick the option your accountant prefers.
-
Step 5: Review before you finish
Each import becomes a batch you can open and check. Fix anything the import could not match — for example an account name that is spelt differently — before you finish.
What happens next
Your accounts and entries are in Smart Books, and each import batch stays listed so you can see what came in and when.
Questions
Can I import only sales or only purchases?
Yes. Imports has separate screens for sales, purchases, credit notes, debit notes and bank entries, each with or without items.
Will importing twice create duplicates?
Review each batch before you finish it. Smart Books also warns you when a supplier invoice number has already been booked.
