Before you start

Who this is for

Businesses starting to use Inventory with stock already on the shelves.

Before you start

  • Your items and warehouses set up.
  • A count of what you have in each warehouse, and what it cost.

Steps

  1. Step 1: Start an Opening Stock document

Open Documents → New document and choose Opening Stock — “Bring stock in with its opening value.”

  2. Step 2: Pick the warehouse

Choose the warehouse this stock is in. Do one document per warehouse.

  3. Step 3: Add the items

Search or scan each item and enter the quantity and its rate. For batch items, enter the batch and expiry.

Tip: For a long list, use Add multiple items or import the lines from a file.

  4. Step 4: Post

Check the totals and choose Save & post.

What happens next

Your stock balances show what is on the shelves, valued at the cost you entered — and that value is what Smart Books uses as your opening stock.

Questions

Can I enter opening stock on the item itself?

Yes, the item’s Stock & Locations section has an Opening stock area. An Opening Stock document is easier for many items at once.
