Billing
Give a credit note for a return or price change
When a customer returns goods or a price was wrong, reduce what they owe with a credit note.
Before you start
Who this is for
Anyone handling customer returns or after-sale discounts.
Before you start
- The original bill the credit note is against.
Steps
-
Step 1: Start a credit note
Choose Sales → Credit note.
-
Step 2: Pick the customer and the bill
Choose who is being credited and Against bill — the bill this note corrects.
-
Step 3: Say what happened
Choose Goods came back if items were returned — Inventory adds them back to stock. Choose Value adjustment only if the price was wrong or a discount was agreed later.
-
Step 4: Pick a reason and issue it
Choose a Reason, check the GST impact and total credit, then issue the note. Smart Books numbers it on your company’s series.
What happens next
The customer owes less, your sales and GST are corrected, and returned goods are back in stock.
