Before you start

A branch is a separate office, shop or location of your business. Adding branches in Smart Books lets you keep the details of each one, such as its GST number, in one place. You need to have a company selected before you can add a branch.

Open Manage Branches

  1. Open the user menu (your profile menu) in Smart Books.
  2. Select Manage branches. The Manage Branches page opens and lists your branches. If you have none yet, it says "No branches found. Create your first branch to get started."

Add a new branch

  1. Select Add Branch at the top right.
  2. In the Add New Branch window, fill in Basic Information. Branch Name is required. You can also enter an Alias (a short name), the Opening Date and the Zone.
  3. Under GSTIN, enter the branch's Regular GSTIN if it has one. A GSTIN is the 15-character GST registration number. It must be exactly 15 characters, or Smart Books will not save it.
  4. Under TAN Details, you can add the TAN Number, Jurisdiction, W.E.F. Date and Inactive Date. TAN is the number used for tax deducted at source.
  5. Select Create Branch. While it saves, the button reads "Saving…". You will then see "Branch created successfully".

Select Cancel if you change your mind.

Edit a branch later

Find the branch in the list and select Edit. The window title becomes Edit Branch. Change what you need and select Update Branch. You will see "Branch updated successfully".

When you edit a branch, its address is shown for reference. The address is kept in your company details in Manage, so use Edit in Manage to change it. The page also has an Open in Manage button at the top, which opens your branch list in Manage in a new tab.

If the branch's GSTIN is already saved in Manage, use Copy Regular GSTIN from Manage in the GSTIN section instead of typing it again.

If you cannot save

  • "Branch name is required": enter a Branch Name.
  • "Regular GSTIN must be exactly 15 characters": check the number and retype it. The messages for the TCS / E-commerce GSTIN and the TDS (GST) GSTIN work the same way.
